Planting and Transplanting Peas

Views:4431|Rating:5.00|View Time:8:41Minutes|Likes:8|Dislikes:0
I started my peas indoors and had planned to plant them in 18 gallon totes on the deck in the rain gutter system that I picked up from Larry Hall. It’s the only veggie I’m growing on the deck this year. The rest will go into the new garden plot and hopefully some in the greenhouse I’m going to build. Depending on where you read or research, peas can be difficult to transplant so many plant them directly into the garden. I devised a pot, I call the ugly pot, just for the pea because I wanted to get a start on the peas. I tried planting peas into the ground at this time of year, but they don’t germinate well in really cold temps. But, once germinated, they grow very well. These peas are the Oregon Sugar Pod II, a pod pea vs a shelling pea. The pea is an awesome vegetable, tastes great, and looks really cool. _______________________________________

Planting Supermarket Garlic

Views:1410|Rating:3.89|View Time:6:20Minutes|Likes:7|Dislikes:2
So, wasn’t going to plant garlic this year, but when I got sweet potatoes at the market for growing slips, I noticed that a pound of garlic was $1.29. So, I got a pound and decided right then to plant where the artichokes were last year. Now, I have to figure out where to plant the sweet onions. Right. Well, there’s folks that say you can’t plant market garlic due to growth inhibitors being sprayed. Others say it is a great deal to use market garlic. I thought I’d give it a go along with shallots, elephant garlic, sweet onion, and leeks. _______________________________________

Planting Sweet Potatoes in Winter

Views:1508|Rating:4.52|View Time:13:21Minutes|Likes:19|Dislikes:2
Saved some of the tips of the sweet potatoes I’d already harvested back the end of August and put in some water to root knowing I might use them again. I wanted to test whether these slips would be viable after flowering to test the possibility of continuous growing of sweets all year long. I demonstrate how I planted up 4 containers which will hopefully get placed in my upcoming heated greenhouse I’m working on now. There is also a follow up on cut-and-come-again at the end. _______________________________________

Growing Shiitake Mushrooms — how to plant an oak log with mushroom plugs

Views:2585|Rating:4.95|View Time:12:28Minutes|Likes:217|Dislikes:2
I’m growing something a little different next year — Shiitake mushrooms. Many years ago I grew mushrooms from a kit but this time I’m trying my hand at growing a delicious variety using inoculated wood plugs and a locally sourced oak log.

The idea is that I plant my log up now and then in 6-12 months I’ll have mushrooms to pick. There’s really nothing like homegrown!

This is my first attempt and I give you all the advice passed on to me from Ann at Ann for Fungi. They include how to drill holes for your fungi plugs and how to situate an oak log. I didn’t mention it in the video but if you’re sourcing your own wood for mushrooms, make sure that it was harvested six or less weeks from the time you inoculate it.

I also pay a visit to Manx Chainsaw Carvings to pick up the log. Tony has graciously given me a log to try this grow-your-own experiment. You need to see the table he’s working on — stunning!

This is part 1 of 2. Two basic set-ups for watering or managing moisture in 5 gallon containers. I use this for tomatoes but it transfers to most vegetables. Know your zone and summer demands. Set up the best system to give your tomatoes an advantage. The single biggest problem for container gardeners is letting their vegetables dry out. Dried roots is the main cause of Blossom End Rot or BER.

Many ornamental flowers and cut flowers are TOXIC. ALWAYS do your own research and take responsibility for the plants that you introduce around your kids, pets, and everyone else. Use common sense when handling plant materials: wear gloves, always wash hands, avoid contact with face, etc. NEVER consume any plant which has not been positively identified with complete certainty to be safe and edible. Before planting anything, research to determine whether specific flowers are considered invasive where you live or if there are laws that apply to their planting in your area.

What is “@freshcutky”?

@freshcutky documents the pursuit of my goal of one day owning my own cut flower farm. Along the way, you’ll see random projects, cooking, and of course – growing stuff. I’m not an expert, and would never claim to be. There’s always more to learn – this is my journey. The purpose of my blog, and other social media accounts (including YouTube) is to share ideas. I do my best to offer information that is useful, but reliance on that information is strictly at your own risk and NOT a substitute for professional advice of any kind. Does Wood Chip Mulch Tie Up Nitrogen & Increase Nitrogen Fertilization Requirements?

Views:125129|Rating:4.94|View Time:5:4Minutes|Likes:1646|Dislikes:21
Today I’d like to talk about an often debated topic – does wood chip mulch tie up nitrogen in the soil and increase nitrogen fertilization requirements?

“The Truth About Garden Remedies” by Jeff Gillman:
“Decoding Gardening Advice” by Jeff Gillman:
“The Truth About Organic Gardening” by Jeff Gillman:
“The Informed Gardener” by Linda Chalker-Scott:
“The Informed Gardener Blooms Again” by Linda Chalker-Scott:

This debate arises from the fact that bacteria need nitrogen to decompose organic matter. And because wood chips have a high carbon to nitrogen ratio, there’s concern that there isn’t sufficient nitrogen in wood chips themselves for decomposition to take place, and bacteria will utilize nitrogen in the soil instead.

OYR is all about growing a lot of food on a little land using sustainable organic methods, while keeping costs and labor at a minimum. Emphasis is placed on improving soil quality with compost, mulch, and compost tea. No store-bought fertilizers, soil amendments, pesticides, compost activators, etc.
are used.
