Charles Dowding’s No-Dig Gardening | Living With The Land | Part 5

Views:135060|Rating:4.94|View Time:6:44Minutes|Likes:988|Dislikes:11
Growing organic vegetables commercially for over 30 years, Charles Dowding has developed a no-dig method of cultivation for temperate climate gardening.

Charles introduces us to Homeacres, his 1/4 acre market garden. Now supplying year-round salad and fresh vegetables for local restaurants, Charles and his partner Steph Hafferty took just one winter to transform it from weedy pasture using mulch and no-dig gardening.

Learn as Charles explains the ideas behind no-dig growing, (replicating nature through mulching and minimal soil disturbance), from his various experimental raised beds, as well as the importance of soil.

Narrated by Jekka McVicar, broadcaster, author and master herbalist |

Charles turns a tonne of compost. Four minute time lapse of an hour’s work

Views:23834|Rating:4.80|View Time:4:22Minutes|Likes:417|Dislikes:17
I improve compost quality and texture by turning/moving a whole heap, with a manure fork, to an adjacent area. Turning is an opportunity to break up lumps and admit fresh air, which feeds bacteria and helps further breakdown. This heap was assembled in October and had been slowly maturing through winter, so the ingredients you see are 3-4 months old. I shall use the compost next autumn, though it could be spread in late spring if needed. Filmed (6th February) and edited by my son Edward We have also filmed the compost-making process, video appearing early March 2017

Charles Dowding’s Incredibly Productive No Dig Market Garden (1/4 Acre)

Charles Dowding’s method of growing food is perhaps one of the most inspiring methods out there. He has developed his own style of no dig vegetable growing through his use of compost and the results really do speak for themselves. I decided to go and take a look at Homeacres to see what he is doing and to find out a bit more about no dig. I hope this video will inspire you to find out more, and these links will be useful for that:
