Confide in silence, cascade your hair for me.
Our gaze in darkness, I feel it start.
Glow so fondly, I know it’s not me, a charming view.
Callous touch from a sensible light, another bridge to abandon sight.
Warming breath will seep within, we count ourselves as the stars, the constellations are ours.
Goodbye my darling, drowned fears of lucid dreams.
Obstructing heartbeats, glazed lust departs.
Grew so fondly, I know it’s not me, surrounding you.
Callous touch from a sensible light, another bridge to abandon sight.
Warming breath will seep within, we count ourselves as the stars, the constellations are ours.

Sur Ridge Sponge and Coral Gardens

Deep below the ocean’s surface underwater mountains are home to spectacular sponge and coral gardens. These corals and sponges create complex, three-dimensional structures that provide habitat for many other animals such as crabs, snailfish, and blob sculpins. Sur Ridge, 35 kilometers off the Big Sur coast and 800 meters below the sea surface, was first explored by MBARI and Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary researchers in December 2013. Since that time, the research team, led by MBARI Senior Scientist Jim Barry, has returned to Sur Ridge five times, conducting a total of 29 ROV dives in the area. As with all MBARI ROV dives, high-definition video was recorded. After the dives, this video was painstakingly analyzed by Linda Kuhnz, a marine biologist in MBARI’s video lab.

As a result, a new field guide was created, identifying more than 260 different species of animals, many of them beautiful and strange. On some slopes of Sur Ridge, fluorescent yellow Picasso sponges cling to the rocky seafloor, growing to half a meter tall. Elsewhere the tree-like branches of bright-pink bubblegum corals extend more than two meters above the ocean bottom.

Hey!
We are a team of young individuals making a difference in our oceans.
We are surfers, fishermen or free-divers and we are conscious of the environmental issues of our island Moorea.
Almost 50% of our island’s coral reefs are DEAD !
First, we want to save this ecosystem by teaching people why reefs are important !
Moreover, we are coral gardeners who plant corals in the aim of building new reefs !

Coral Gardening: Frontline in the Battle Against Climate Change | Dr Austin Bowden-Kerby | TEDxSuva

Austin is one of the worlds first pioneers in ‘Coral Gardening’. He is a leading expert in the most effective ways to restore coral degradation on reefs in the Caribbean and Pacific and incredibly passionate about the important role coral reefs play for our entire planet.

Austin’s talk locates coral reefs at the frontline in the battle against the effects of climate change. He argues our reefs are the most sensitive system to its effects so if we can save the reefs we can save the planet.

Dr Austin Bowden-Kerby is recognised as one of the worlds pioneers of ‘Coral Gardening’. He has spent many years providing community workshops and establishing coral nurseries across the Pacific and Caribbean.

Raised in the Pacific, Austin has been married for 36 years and has four children and six grandchildren. A Fiji citizen, he operates a 37 acre permaculture farm and hatchery for climate adapted chickens and runs a small not-for-profit organisation in Fiji called ‘SELF: Sustainable Environmental Livelihoods for the Future’. SELF works with communities on coral restoration, coral reef management, the promotion of free range chickens as alternative protein to fish to support no-fishing areas.

Austin’s work has been the focus of three BBC TV documentaries. He is also winner of the prestigious National Geographic Ashoka Changemakers Award for the Environment in 2011.

This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at

More films about environment and ecology:
Coral reefs are highly important in marine ecosystems. They provide food, shelter and a breeding ground for a wide variety of fish and sea organisms. However, their own well-being has recently come under threat. A disease known as the “white plague” has been wreaking havoc in coral reefs the world over. RTD goes to Thailand to meet scientists, nature lovers and volunteers who have joined forces in an attempt to save the beautiful underwater gardens.
