A small Japanese-style garden adds excitement to a woodsy backyard. Japanese gardens combine the basic elements of water, plants, and rocks with clean, simple, lines to create a tranquil retreat. This garden dates back to the Muromachi period, the fifteenth century. Its physical form represents Zen Buddhist philosophy, Zen self-examination, spiritual refinement, and enlightenment.
