Turning, or cultivating, your mulch will alleviate the crust and darken the appearance of your mulch. Compacted mulch in garden and landscape beds does not allow air, water or nutrients to reach the plant roots. Mulch with a crust should be turned before applying new mulch.

To improve your soil, and allow for proper soil drainage, add organic material or compost. Test your soil with a soil testing kit to be sure you have a healthy plant base for growth.
Drought resist plants are placed near the front of the property in the arid zone. Plants requiring moderate watering are placed in the transitional zone. An oasis zone is created in an area that has natural drainage for plants that need the most water.
Avoid watering the entire landscape by hand, because a lot of the water evaporates before it reaches the roots. Install a drip irrigation system instead, using the step-by-step installation instructions available in this video. The best time to water your lawn is early in the morning. During the day, too much evaporation occurs. Watering at night leaves too much moisture on the leave, promoting diseases.
Add mulch to garden beds to limit water evaporation and weed growth, and to regulate soil temperature. For information on planning your Waterwise landscape, watch How to Design & Plan a Waterwise Back Yard Landscape at

Landscape architecture has a fraught relationship with gardening, despite having developed from it via landscape gardening, as it has sought professionalization by becoming more architectural. Raxworthy argues that as landscape architecture has become more representational it has lost touch with maintenance tools in gardening that allow for the optimization of the properties of change that landscape materials like plants have, such as growth. Here, Raxworthy presents an overview of his latest book, Overgrown: Practice between Landscape Architecture and Gardening which was supported by a Graham Foundation grant in 2016 and published by MIT Press in 2018. The book advances a new model for plant form: “the viridic”—from the Latin for green, virent, and growth, viridesco—a landscape equivalent of the tectonic, which has been undertheorized in landscape architecture, and encourages the discipline to engage directly with the garden.

The film features Michael Hordern, and John Savident as Repton. (1991).

I am not a fan of stabby and spikey, I design with the Rain Forest in mind and apply a layering technique to create a symbiotic relationship in the garden. This month Avery Ranch, Austin Texas had a private tour for over 3500 residents to demonstrate how Xeriscape can look. In light of our recent changes in landscape requirements by our HOA. Avery Ranch is setting a trend to allow a”Variance” of our original requirements. Now allowing 75% Xeriscape and 25% sod in the front yard and 100% Xerophytic back yards!! How cool is that? The great variety of species and soil types creates the need for a variety of weed management options. A common technique to suppress weed growth is the use of mulch. The most common types of mulch are bark and other wood products and black plastic or landscape fabric materials. This video shows how to install a landscape fabric topped by an organic mulch.

They can also be propagated by seed indoors about 8-10 weeks prior to your last expected spring frost. Coleus can be added to beds and borders for interest or grown in containers.
They need fertile, well-draining soil and usually perform best in areas with partial shade, though many varieties can also tolerate sun. When growing coleus, keep in mind that these beauties can grow rapidly. Plant coleus close together as bedding plants or tuck them into baskets and containers for a fast growing and spectacular addition.
Care for Coleus Plant
Caring for coleus is just as easy. They need to be kept moist, especially newly planted coleus. Container plants also require more frequent watering than those grown in the garden. Although it’s not required, the plants can be given a boost of half-strength liquid fertilizer during their active growth in spring and summer. Their spiked flowers usually appear in summer; however, these can be removed if desired. You can also pinch the shoots of young coleus plants to produce bushier growth.
Another factor in coleus care is overwintering, as these plants, which are considered tender annuals, are highly susceptible to cold temperatures. Therefore, they must either be dug up, potted and brought indoors for overwintering or grown through cuttings to establish additional plants.
Plectranthus scutellarioides, commonly known as coleus, is a species of flowering plant in the family Lamiaceae (the mint or deadnettle family), native to southeast Asia through to Australia. Typically growing to 60–75 cm (24–30 in) tall and wide, it is a bushy, woody-based evergreen perennial, widely grown for the highly decorative variegated leaves found in cultivated varieties. Another common name is painted nettle, reflecting its relationship to deadnettles (Lamium species), which is in the same family. (True nettles and their close kin are in the family Urticaceae.) The synonyms Coleus blumei and Solenostemon scutellarioides are also widely used names for this species.
