Easy DIY Formula for the Best Potting Mix preparation for Home Gardening that helps Plants grow and produce more flowers and also the best seed starter mix. The Video is on the best All-purpose Potting mix for all your plants based on scientific concepts.
We will also make an Ideal Terrace Gardening light weight potting mixture and the best seed starting mix.
Let me start with the 3 P’s of Successful Gardening.
1. Planning your Garden
2. Potting Mix Preparation and
3. Planting
So, Today we will discuss on the second P of gardening, that’s Preparing the best potting Mix for your plants based on some useful scientific concepts. Please watch the video till the end. First we will discuss the Criteria for the best potting soil for your plants and then the formula or the recipe for the best all-purpose universal potting mixture for your gardening.
Well, You need to Understand this Point: Why cant I just dig up the ground and use this soil for my plants? This is because we have two major limitations of this:
1. Compaction or hardening of soil – mainly with clayey soil which can suffocate the roots.
2. Lack of Nutrients in the soil- that’s the Major NPK elements (Nitrogen, Phosphorous and Potassium) and also the minor trace elements.
Hence, the need to prepare your own potting soil arises.
Hold on friends, some more important concepts to learn before I disclose my recipe. A few criteria you should be taking care while preparing your potting mix.

1. DRAINAGE: We all know, too much water can rot your plants. So a well draining soil that quickly drains out water within a particular duration of time is important for all plants. This is the most important criteria for growing succulents and based on this you adjust the proportions of stuff like sand, perlite and other stuff.
2. WATER RETAINING CAPACITY: This is quite opposite of the first factor. So we have to add materials in such a way that the water should neither drain out too quickly nor it should stagnate in the container.
3. NUTRIENTS: This is a very important criteria in container gardening. We have to add certain nutrients into the potting mix so that your plant can produce flowering or fruiting at right time and grows in a healthy manner.
Having said that, Now Lets Start making our Potting Mix with the best and easily available ingredients.
I am showing you two formulae: Please watch the video for these details.

5-1-1 Potting Mix – High porosity, well draining mix

Views:39417|Rating:4.77|View Time:6:22Minutes|Likes:417|Dislikes:20
A review of the 5-1-1 high porosity potting mix. This uses 5 parts pine bark, 1 part peat moss and 1 part perlite. I modified the original version by using 2 parts of peat moss instead of 1. This causes better water retention. This is a high maintenance potting mix but very well draining.

The 511 potting mix or 511 planting mix is a very fast draining potting mix. Since drainage is a very important for potted plants, having a proper drainage system helps your plants grow better.

2 five gallon buckets full peat moss
1 five gallon bucket Well rotted horse manure or compost or worm castings
1 and 1/2 cup Garden lime
1 large coffee can full of perlite
1 handful of Epsom salts

Take a look at my garden and you will see the results!

How To Build A Self Watering Rain Gutter Grow System!!!!
Ok so you want to build a Rain Gutter Grow System! Here is what you will need! 2 10 ft treated 2×4’s 1 10 ft rain gutter and 2 end caps.I prefer the U snap brand because you can use standard pvc cement to glue on the ends. You will need 3 inch net cups they are cheap! Drill a 2/78 inch hole in your container that you are going to plant in and the 3 inch net cup fits perfectly. Also you’ll need some pole barn roofing screws because they have a water tight seal on them. also a mini float valve to regulate water I use the one with the male 1/2 inch threads and buy a 1/2 threaded garden hose adapter to connect to it. You also can get the 3/8 barbed version and some 3/8 plastic hose and daisy chain a bunch together. You can use any good potting mix to grow your veggies in Not potting soil! Miracle grow potting mix works great or you can mix your own by using 2/3rds peat moss and 1/3 well rotted manure or compost and a couple of good handfuls of perlite! It lightens the soil. I also add about a cup of garden lime or dolomite, I also throw in a handful of Epsom salts. A standard batch I will make would be 2 5 gallon buckets of peat 1 bucket of compost or well rotted manure 1 cup garden lime and a handful Epsom salts. It has worked great for me Here is a link to the video on how I built the unit! Good Luck and let me know how you like the system! If you have any question please message me! Larry
